Abstract: The empirical development of an indirect drill wear monitoring method in circuit board drilling is presented. Spindle vibration and mean drilling torque were measured using a single spindle drilling machine, and their usefulness in detecting drill wear was evaluated. The sensitivity of these measurements to potential changes in process parameters is examined, and linear discriminant functions are presented for monitoring drill wear with a sensor fusion approach.
