Abstract: The response of beams constrained unilaterally by a foundation and upper barriers while under monotonic loading is treated. Several scenarios featuring gaps and clearances are solved and shown to agree with Dundurs’ predictions. The solutions are generated by a numerical simulation featuring a direct incremental algorithm in conjunction with the finite element method.
