description abstract | Comprehensive NDE data have been acquired on approximately 1000 main shaft ball bearings used in J57/TF33 gas turbine engines by processing through the Automated Bearing Inspection System, Mark I CIBLE. Bearing service hours ranged from zero (new) to approximately 13,000 hr; inclusions and service induced cracks were detected in a significant number of components. Endurance testing as well as metallurgical sectioning and scanning electron microscope investigations were used in correlation analyses. A linear extrapolation to the total service population of J57/TF33 #2 bearing position results in a forecast of over 200 cracked bearings in the fleet of B52, KC135, C141, and E3A aircraft that use these engines. | |
