Abstract: Large amplitude oscillations of a simple pendulum whose support moves with a prescribed vertical oscillation are studied by an approximate method. Subharmonics of order 1/2, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/8 are discussed and the theoretical results are compared with experiments. The stability of the theoretical steady states is investigated by the method of Andronow and Will.
