Abstract: A theoretical study is made of the implications of a Dugdale-Barenblatt model for fatigue crack growth under steady cyclic loading. Residual plastic stretches and the effects of crack closure on crack opening and closing loads are calculated by complex function methods for a range of loading ratios. An assessment is made of the influence of cyclic strain hardening and softening.
