Abstract: The stress field and the time dependent deformation around a solution cavity in rock salt are shown to be sensitive to the details of the excavation process and to the prevailing tectonic stress field. An analysis procedure is developed whereby an incremental excavation procedure and a creep routine are incorporated simultaneously into an axisymmetric finite element code.
