Abstract: Consider a semi-infinite, elastic body with its boundary a plane except for a solid circular cylinder which has its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the boundary plane. This paper contains an approximate solution for the effective rotation of the semi-infinite body when a bending moment is applied to the cylinder. The applied stress is assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the bending axis. In addition, the rotation was determined experimentally and is compared with the analytical solution. The maximum difference between the rotation obtained analytically and experimentally is 18 per cent. Since some of the experimental values were greater and some were less than the analytical values and since the experimental techniques employed may have produced results which are in error by the amount of the variation between the specimens, the analytical equation should be regarded as correct within the accuracy of available test data.
