description abstract | The behavior of a cylinder wake in a weak uniformly sheared external stream is studied. It is found that the departure of the wake from the linear velocity distribution of the external flow is approximately self preserving. There is a tendency for the wake to grow faster on the “high velocity” side (where ∂U/∂y has the same sign inside and outside the wake) than on the “low velocity” side (where the signs of ∂U/∂y are different). This result agrees with the limited evidence on the growth of boundary layers under a uniformly sheared free stream. The turbulence structures on the two sides of the wake appear to behave independently of each other. | |
