ASME ( American Society of Mechanical Engineers )
Description: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a professional association that, in its own words, "promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe" via "continuing education, training and professional development, codes and standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations, and other forms of outreach." ASME is thus an engineering society, a standards organization, a research and development organization, a lobbying organization, a provider of training and education, and a nonprofit organization. Founded as an engineering society focused on mechanical engineering in North America, ASME is today multidisciplinary and global.

Vibration of an Eccentrically Clamped Annular Plate
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: Small amplitude vibration of an eccentric annular plate, which is free along its outer edge and clamped along the interior, is investigated through experimental and analytical methods. A disk ...
Surface Friction Guiding for Reduced High-Frequency Lateral Vibration of Moving Media
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: The free and forced vibration of a moving medium is examined in an application where distributed friction guiding is used to control lateral position passively. Subambient pressure features ...
Corrugation and Buckling Defects in Wound Rolls
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: Sheet metal, paper, and polymer webs are often stored and processed as large rolls comprising thousands of layers. Depending on the elastic properties of the web material, the roll’s dimensions, ...
Air Entrainment During Steady-State Web Winding
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: As a web is wound at speed onto a roll, a thin layer of air becomes entrapped between it and the incoming web stream. The resulting spiral-shaped air bearing separates adjacent web layers ...
Adaptive Piezoelectric Vibration Control With Synchronized Switching
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: An autonomous vibration controller that adapts to variations in a system’s mass, stiffness, and excitation, and that maximizes dissipation through synchronized switching is described. In the model ...
Lateral Vibration and Read/Write Head Servo Dynamics in Magnetic Tape Transport
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: Magnetic tape is a flexible mechanical structure having dimensions that are orders of magnitude different in its thickness, width, and length directions. In order to position the tape relative ...
Free Linear Vibration of Self-Pressurized Foil Bearings
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: A foil bearing is formed when a flexible medium travels across a stationary rigid surface and entrains a thin layer of fluid that lubricates the relative sliding motion. Such bearings are ...
Edge Buckling of Imperfectly Guided Webs
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: Web handling is germane to a diverse set of industries, including paper, polymer, textile, and sheet metal processing. Angular misalignment of the guides used to position a web in its transport ...
On the Vibration of Coupled Traveling String and Air Bearing Systems
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: Air bearings are used to position and guide such axially-moving materials as high speed magnetic tapes, paper sheets, and webs. In each case, vibration of the moving medium couples with the ...
Response Solutions for the Vibration of a Traveling String on an Elastic Foundation
Publisher: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Abstract: This Tech Brief presents solutions to the response problem for the vibration of an axially-moving string that is supported by an elastic foundation. This system is of technical interest in the ...
