description abstract | The hoop stresses which are generated at the circumference of a circular hole in a large plate when a pressure wave is diffracted, were measured by photoelastic methods. A plane pressure pulse of short duration and approximately triangular shape was generated by the detonation of a strip-explosive over one edge of the plate. Measurements were carried out for three values of the ratio, 2a/Λ, of the diameter of the hole to the length of the stress pulse. Dimensionless hoop stresses are plotted versus the time after detonation and versus the ratio 2a/Λ. The dimensionless hoop stress decreases as 2a/Λ increases. The measured values show good agreement with analytical computations. | |
