description abstract | The steady, two-dimensional, constant properly flow and temperature distribution are calculated for turbulent flow in a square cavity over which there is a bounded flow with an initially uniform velocity. This is done by solutions of the finite-difference equations, stabilized for iteration by taking the first derivatives in the “upstream” direction. When such a solution incorporates corrections for the large truncation error produced by taking the derivatives in this way, results are obtained which compare favorably to many aspects of the available experimental data at a Reynolds number of 1.5 × 105 . Velocity and temperature distribution are well predicted within the cavity and the shear layer, and wall temperatures are in excellent agreement with experiment over a considerable fraction of the wall area. | |
