Abstract: An inequality is described which allows the evaluation of upper bounds to the displacement of an elastic/perfectly plastic structure subject to variable loading. Simple examples indicate that although the bound may not be very accurate, it may well provide a useful additional calculation to the limit state and shakedown solutions.
