    Abstract: The condition for bifurcation of equilibrium for an elastic-plastic cylindrical shell under axial compression is established. The shape of the yield surface has been left arbitrary; hence the result is applicable to a wide class of inelastic solids. It is shown that the value of the critical stress is quite sensitive to the variation in the unit normal to the local yield surface.
