description abstractResearch in sensors has historically encompassed such areas as physics-based sensing principles, sensor design, sensor signal processing, and sensing for system control. The past decade has witnessed an increasing convergence of the information technology with communication and system miniaturization technologies, which has accelerated the advancement of sensor technology and placed it at the verge of significant growth in the 21st century. New, enabling technologies such as MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) have contributed to the ubiquitous presence of sensors in transportation vehicles, manufacturing systems, civil structures, power plants, kitchen appliances, and many other industrial and commercial fields, quietly transforming society and the way of life in many parts of the world. Providing a focused collection of quality papers dealing with the fundamentals and advanced applications of sensors for the better design, monitoring, and control of dynamic systems is the primary motivation for this Special Section on Sensors, and the 10 papers included herein provide a glimpse into some of the latest achievements of research in this vibrant field.
