description abstractExperimental results for thermal systems consisting of pin-fin heat sinks situated below chimneys are presented. System-level heat transfer and porosity optimization results are compared with previous theoretical predictions. Generally good agreement, both in trend and magnitude, exists between theory and experiment. An optimal porosity of 91 percent is observed for most conditions. Velocity measurements at the chimney exit and the effects of cold inflow are presented and discussed. [S1043-7398(00)00604-6]
