    Abstract: An algorithm based on a combination of the upper bound method and finite element repesentation has been developed. The algorithm is applied to the problem of a rigid indenter ploughing through a rigid/perfectly-plastic material. Numerical examples are given and the results are compared with previous approximate solutions. Limitations of the upper bound method are discussed.
