Abstract: This paper concerns the nonlinear mechanical behavior of a single craze of finite length contained in an extended linear elastic medium. The craze is modeled as a distributed spring with a nonlinear force-displacement relation, which exhibits a hysteresis loop upon unloading. Stresses, displacements, and energy release rates are computed and compared against results for a linear craze. The case of a central crack within the craze is also considered.
