Abstract: Various aspects of MSA are presented, including a classification and application scheme. Described are general principles, common to applications of different character. These include data reduction, processing techniques, as well as the identification of some major existing problems. The MSA papers of this special issue of the Journal are briefly discussed in view of this presentation.
