description abstractThis paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the sub-synchronous rotating flow patterns in a centrifugal compressor with vaneless diffuser. Several compressor configurations have been examined by means of hot wire anemometry, Fourier analysis allowed one to distinguish between the different modes of unstable operation. For both impeller and diffuser rotating stall, comparison is made between the amplitude, frequency, and periodicity of the induced velocity fluctuations. The results are further cross-checked with other experimental data.
