Abstract: Methods are presented to construct a three-dimensional model of a composite surface asperity based on profile measurements taken in different directions. The theory used to accomplish this is based on least squares estimation to find a locus equation for the moment properties measured experimentally in five directions. The asperity model is developed based on this locus of moment properties of height and slope, which are used to interpolate in different directions to generate the base and sides of an asperity. Two examples are used to show how these techniques can be used. One is a face milled cast iron surface and the other a surface ground specimen of low carbon steel.
