description abstractThe deformation of a thin, incomplete, elastic ring being pushed through a frictional channel is analyzed. The problem is formulated using the nonlinear theory of the elastica and it is found that, depending on the channel geometry, either two deformed shapes for the ring are possible, or else no solution is possible. The results are applied to the design of machines such as plain-paper copiers, self-threading tapes, and sewing machines.
