Basic Speed Ratio of an Angular Contact Bearing

Abstract: A characteristic number, the basic speed ratio for an angular contact ball bearing, is defined and shown to be 1) accurately measurable; and 2) dependent on ball-race coupling. Some measurements of basic speed ratio are discussed in terms of kinematic equivalence, and compared with predictions obtained from a computer simulation. It is suggested that race control of the ball may exist, but it is control for slip rather than for pivoting.
