Abstract: A theory is proposed such that slopes of tangents drawn to plastic portions of load-displacement curves for the determination of limit loads can be estimated using the elastic portion of load-displacement curves, the elastic modulus and a plastic modulus. The approach is called “the plastic modulus method” and appears to reduce uncertainties in the use of the tangent-intersection method.
