| description abstract | The paper reviews briefly the vibration problems encountered when using overhung boring bars to profile bore high duty alloy workpieces. It shows how the dynamic instability can be successfully represented by a self-induction term and incorporated in the equations of motion for an analogue of a boring bar, but which incorporates new information of the mechanism of operation of a Lanchester damper recently reported [1]. The solutions for maximum performance are given and the method for using these to evolve an optimization design procedure are described. Further new information on absorber performance is given which explains how response curves can be interpreted and, finally, the conditions and performance for machining “difficult” high duty alloys are discussed. | |
