Abstract: Fresh whole blood has been subjected to transient rarefactions of approximately 50 μs duration. In this loading regime blood is found to be capable of supporting propagating rarefactions of up to 3.71 MN/m2 . The character of the propagation and failure is similar to that exhibited by water.
