description abstractAn approximate solution is presented for the deflection of a thin plate and for the stresses and deformation of a layered circular cylinder in which the plate is pressed against the layered soft cylinder by a hard cylinder. The contact is considered as frictionless, and the plate has an initial curvature. Since the load on the plate is radial and the initial curvature is arbitrary, nonlinear beam theory is used. The state of the layered circular cylinder is described by a general stress function. The collocation method is used to relate loading and displacements between the contact surface of the plate and the soft substrate of the cylinder.
