Abstract: A study of the dynamic stability of a slider-crank mechanism with an undamped elastic connecting rod is presented using the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. It is shown that new regions of instability exist when rotary inertia and shear deformation effects are included in the analysis.
