Abstract: The effect of metal composition on the diffusivity of carbon during carburizing several commercial steels has been investigated using electron probe microanalysis as well as hardness measurements and microscopy. Additions (up to several wt. percent) of nickel and chromium have little effect on thickness of carburized case but increase the total carbon level in immediate surface regions by forming iron carbide; the amount actually dissolved in the alloy is lower than in a plain carbon steel.
