Abstract: Two dimensional Fourier transform methods developed by Ling to calculate contact temperatures were applied to the case of a dry bearing operating with a plastic liner. Results show that uncertainties concerning heat distribution along the contact arc cause smaller differences in contact temperatures than some apparently minor design changes. The effect on temperature of various parameters such as liner position, liner thickness, types of motion and speed, and cooling conditions is given. The method proves to be valuable as a guide in the design of dry bearings.
