description abstractOf concern is the response induced in a chemically reacting elastic sphere by a spatially uniform applied surface pressure. The analysis, which is carried out in the context of a linearized theory, is concentrated mainly on the behavior during the time it takes for a pulse to travel from the surface to the center. An interesting interplay is described which develops between the dominance of mechanical effects near the center and possible chemical-reaction effects near the surface.
