A Possible Mechanism for Causing Eccentricity in Sleeved Backup Rolls on Cold-Rolling Mills

Abstract: A theoretical analysis has shown that axial slipping of the sleeve on the roll arbor rather than plastic deformation of the roll necks may be the cause of backup-roll eccentricity on cold-rolling mills. The force levels required to initiate the slipping motion are less than the levels required to plastically yield the necks. Furthermore, the degree of eccentricity caused by relative motion may be sufficient to produce unacceptable gage variations in the rolled product. Finally, a suitable thermal treatment may be used to relieve the internal frictional stresses generated by the slipping motion.
