| description abstract | Determination of yield and ultimate strengths and elongation in three orthogonal directions by means of the double ligament tensile test permits detailed exploration of anisotropy in rolled plate, extrusions, forgings and castings of relatively small size. Values obtained at low average strain rates can be compared with impact energy values obtained from tensile impact tests using identical specimens. Data are presented from tests of a number of medium strength, low carbon, rolled steel plates which reveal dramatic differences in properties in various directions. The total strain energies from these tests are correlated with impact energy values and confirm the expected relationship. The test may have special application to the exploration of problems in lamellar tearing. | |
