Optimum Design for a Corrugated Diaphragm Clamped to a Shaft Undergoing Axial or Angular Displacement

Abstract: The bending of a circular corrugated diaphragm which is clamped along its outer edge and clamped to a shaft at its geometric center is analyzed. The shaft may undergo small axial displacements or small angular displacements in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the original plate surface. The diaphragm is treated as a polar-orthotropic plate and closed form solutions are obtained for the deflection and stresses at any point for cases with and without a uniform load acting on the diaphragm surface. Maximum deflections and stresses are located and optimum inner-to-outer diameter ratios are determined.
