description abstractPropagation of SH-waves through a fiber-reinforced composite has been considered. Fibers are taken to be elliptic in cross section and are assumed to be randomly distributed. It has been shown that the medium behaves like a homogeneous orthotropic one if the major axes of the ellipses are oriented in a particular direction. Elliptic cavities and Griffith cracks have been treated as special cases. Numerical results are presented for the average rigidities and also shear stresses on a cavity.
