Abstract: This article reviews some of the reasons why engineers decide to become self-employed as engineering or management consultants. The primary reasons discussed are: demise of job security; frustration with management; inadequate earnings and net worth; stagnation; being hindered by internal perceptions that limit advancement opportunity; dismissal, demotion, or being bypassed for promotion; and retirement. The article also offers some advice with respect to taking the plunge toward self-employment: In the words of Henry David Thoreau, Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined.
