Abstract: Moment capacities of shallow foundations are compared with those of reinforced concrete walls in order to determine the likelihood of exceeding the bearing capacity of the supporting soil in buildings subjected to strong ground motions. Recommendations are made regarding the appropriate modeling at the base of first-story walls in compliance with the moment-capacity axial load interaction of the supporting foundations.
