Characterizing Effects of Changes in Soil Phase on Elastic Wave Velocities for Sand with Different Moisture Contents
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Geohazards such as slope failures and retaining wall collapses have been observed during thawing season, typically in early spring. These geohazards are often attributed to changes in the engineering properties of soil ... -
Effective Stress and Suffusion Onset at Local and Global Scales in Centrifuge Permeameter Tests
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)This study presents the results from a series of centrifuge tests conducted in a novel permeameter capable of measuring both global and layer permeability. Six tests were undertaken at gravitational accelerations ranging ... -
Robust Calibration of Shaft and Base Resistance Factors for Piles Based on Multiobjective Optimization
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Resistance factors are used to account for the uncertainties associated with pile resistance in load and resistance factor design (LRFD). Current design codes and most previous studies recommend a single resistance factor ... -
LS-DEM Guided Analysis of Geotechnical Tests: Exploring Strength Anisotropy and Stress Dependency
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Reliable interpretation of model tests in geotechnical engineering often is hampered by the limitations of traditional laboratory element testing, especially under low-stress conditions and unconventional stress paths. ... -
An X-Ray CT Study on Transitional Internal Erosion under Triaxial Shearing
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Internal erosion poses a significant threat to many geotechnical infrastructures as fine particles removed from gap-graded soils, which can be promoted by mechanical disturbances caused by human activities and natural ... -
Robust Geotechnical Design of Piles Incorporating System Reliability
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)There is a trade-off between pile safety and cost, and a balance between the two factors is crucial. An important aspect of pile safety that is often overlooked is design robustness, which requires that the structural ... -
Modeling Erodibility of Cohesive Soils Based on Rotating Surface Erosion Tests
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Surface erosion, which removes the surficial soil grains from the streambeds, slopes, and earthen embankments, is one of the major causes of geohazards and engineering failures. At present, there is no acceptable model ... -
A New Associative Yield Function for Suction-Embedded Plate Anchors in Undrained Clay
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)This study proposes a new associative yield function (f*) for suction-embedded plate anchors in undrained clay, addressing the limitations of the commonly used yield function (f). Firstly, 2,520 three-dimensional finite-element ... -
Pipeline–Soil Interaction Behavior: Acoustic Emission and Energy Dissipation
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Acoustic emission (AE) offers the potential to monitor and interpret soil–pipe interaction behavior by sensing particle-scale interactions. However, application of AE is limited by gaps in understanding related to how ... -
Shake-Table Test Study of Dynamic Response of Soil–Pile Interaction System in Seasonally Frozen Soil Regions
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)The presence of frozen soil layers leads to stratification in soil stiffness, thereby influencing the dynamic response of pile foundations in seasonally frozen soil regions. This study investigated the dynamic response of ... -
Distributed Fiber-Optic Monitoring of Free-Field Soil Response under Normal Faulting: Full-Scale Experiment and Analytical Solution
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Reasonable assessment of free-field soil strain is fundamental to quantifying the hazards induced by normal faulting. Previous studies provided insights into the propagation mechanisms of fault rupture within the overlying ... -
Stress-Based CPTu Cyclic Liquefaction Triggering Procedures: Improvements from a State Parameter Approach
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)The study of the liquefaction phenomenon and its consequences has been of permanent research interest in geotechnical earthquake engineering due to the wide recognition of its significant damage potential. However, despite ... -
LRFD Calibration of Internal Limit States for Polymer Strap MSE Walls
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)The paper demonstrates load and resistance factor design (LRFD) calibration for tensile strength, connection strength, pullout, and soil failure internal stability limit states for polyester strap mechanically stabilized ... -
Construction of Quasi-Site-Specific Geotechnical Transformation Models Using Bayesian Sparse Dictionary Learning
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)Transformation models commonly are used in geotechnical practice to estimate design parameters (e.g., friction angle ϕ) required for geotechnical design and analysis from measurement data obtained from laboratory or ... -
Contribution of Osmotic Suction to Suction Stress for Unsaturated Saline Clay and Its Suction Stress Characteristic Curve
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2025)The presence of water and salt transport in complex hydrochemical environments allows for continuous changes in the suction state of clay (matric suction, osmotic suction, and their interactions). The interaction between ... -
