description abstractThe statical method for solving the problem of minimum volume design of sandwich conical shells obeying the Tresca criterion is presented. By employing variational techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions for an absolute minimum are obtained. The form of the solution is shown to be geometry as well as load-dependent. Conditions for uniqueness are established and a nonunique example is presented. Examples are presented for conical shells with a rigidly attached central boss.
