    Abstract: This is one of a series of papers by the authors on the loads exerted by bulk solids on containing bins. In this paper, the concepts are described. In particular, the principle of minimum recoverable strain energy is applied in the determination of pressure fields. In companion papers the concepts are developed into design formulas.
