Abstract: The use of heated rolls in hot-rolling of metals is explored and its possible advantages are discussed. Simplified heat-transfer analyses are performed and residual thermal stresses are estimated to lend support to the claimed advantages. Using tungsten and beryllium strips, laboratory experiments were performed to check the feasibility of the concept. The observed degree of reduction per pass and the measurement of surface temperature of the strips, at exit, verify the predictions of the analyses quite well. It is anticipated that the analyses developed in the paper can be used in predicting the performance of other metals in hot rolling with heated rolls.
