Abstract: A high pressure seal between a moving shaft and a pressure vessel can be formed by arranging for the shaft to pass through a closely fitting externally pressurized sleeve. This paper analyzes the elastic deformation of the sleeve and shaft, and the leakage through the clearance space, for an arbitrary geometry and working fluid. Design curves are presented for use with water.
