description abstractThis paper deals with the inverse problem of large deformation of very thin shells. An inflated shell of known shape is considered and the differential equations are derived for the case that the inflation pressure is decreased or entirely removed. They are applied to a toroid which is circular in cross section when fully inflated. It is found that under decreasing pressure the shell cannot remain smooth, but develops wrinkles on part of its surface.
