description abstractA fundamental mathematical model for the flow-type multistage machining system was built in an attempt to determine optimum machining conditions to be set on production stages. Based upon three kinds of evaluation criteria, i.e., the maximum production rate, the minimum production cost, and the maximum profit rate, the optimal cutting speeds to be set on production stages and the optimal cycle time for the multistage machining system were theoretically analyzed, and the computational procedure for obtaining them was developed. The computer program was also prepared and used to solve typical examples of optimzation of the multistage machining system.
