Abstract: General expressions are developed which approximate the expansion factor of any orifice in any installation for both subsonic and supercritical flows. These factors are based on a presumed knowledge of the incompressible contraction coefficient for the same orifice. Comparisons are made between the suggested approximations and: ASME empirical expansion factors; previous experimental studies; and new experimental work.
