description abstractThis Note is concerned with the impact between an indenter and a plate through a linear spring. The plate is sufficiently large to ignore reflections from its boundaries. Calculations are made on the duration of impact, the coefficient of restitution and the force-time and displacement-time characteristics. Analysis of the direct impact of a flat-ended, rigid indenter with a plate, yields the interesting result that the coefficient of restitution is independent of the elastic moduli of the plate.
