description abstractThis paper summarizes the results of engineering investigations conducted using a variety of computational modeling tools to evaluate different options for cofiring up to 10% (input energy) biomass in an existing large tangentially coal fired boiler. Options investigated included the direct combustion of solid biomass via both existing and auxiliary burners, the external gasification of the solid biomass, and the external combustion of the biomass in an auxiliary boiler. The methodology used, key results, and discussion of the relative features of the options studied are described in this paper.
