description abstractThe equation of motion for a curved dislocation moving at high velocities in a slip plane is solved for a dislocation half-mill. It is found that the angular velocity of a dislocation half-mill about the pinning point is constant for constant stress. The solution is applied to a Frank-Read source to give the shape of the nucleating source and the time of activation. For Al, the time of nucleation of a Frank-Read source is about 9 × 10−10 sec when the stress on the source is 5 × 10−4 G.
