Abstract: An intracorporeal left ventricular bypass, incorporating an electrically driven roller pump, has operated successfully in unrestrained calves for periods up to 11 days. A pneumatically powered prototype, designed for eventual human application, extends potential effective pumping periods to two months in tests simulating implanted conditions. Mechanical design and materials maintain clotting and cell damage below traumatic levels and no subsequent ill effects are indicated.
