description abstractThe rationale behind and the educational goals of the Solar Splash intercollegiate solar/electric boat competition are examined. An assessment is made as to how well these educational goals are being met, including a brief discussion of competition participant problems. An apparent “mismatch” is identified between the Solar Splash rules and resultant boat designs and the goals for most collegiate engineering design courses, and possible methods of correction are discussed.
