description abstract | The frictional characteristics of oil-impregnated sintered-metal bearing (OSB) and herringbone-grooved fluid bearing (HFB) with varying loads and speeds were measured, and their electrical properties assembled in the scanner motor were also measured to develop new journal bearings, which could overcome the speed limit of ball bearing. OSB shows very good performance up to 20,000 rpm, and HFB successfully works up to 35,000 rpm. From the endurance tests on start-stop and continuous operating, it was confirmed that those bearings could satisfy the demand for high-rotating technology and could be mass-produced for use on high-speed scanner motor in a laser scanner unit.
